EXCURSION: DAY ONE

We left Berlin, the place we have been calling home for two weeks now, at seven in the morning. Our first stop was in Dessau. There we showed up to THE BAUHAUS!!! The place where modernism was born!  Through this school they wanted to bring back the art of craft.  They wanted to create furniture and objects that could be mass produced and available to everyone without giving up design elements.  The Bauhaus was built and ran by Walter Gropius.  An artist that I particularly like, Waisly Kandinsky, was also a teacher there.  The school was soon taken over by the Nazis during WWII and went through lots of changes.  Eventually, it was restored to its original state with the exception of a few double pain windows that weren't there but had to be installed because of energy purposes. We got the opportunity to see the theatre, the cafe, the student living, Gropius' office, and the workshops.  This has been one of my favorite sites that have I have seen this far on the trip.
so tired but so excited!

We left for Nurnburg where we unloaded the bus at a very old and quaint hotel.  We visited some very old churches and a castle where you could see the whole city from the top.  Nurnburg was very different from Berlin.  Berlin is a fairly new city where Nurnburg isn't and it was nice to feel that difference in the people and atmosphere of the city.
